Starting social media conversations

Social media platforms present a great opportunity for your business to start conversations with your ideal customers. However, it can be overwhelming to get started and frustrating if your conversations are one-sided.

People use social media to connect with others. They'll follow friends and family, as well as their favourite brands. You don't have to be a big brand to gain a following, but you do need to give people a reason to follow you.

One of the biggest mistakes that a business can make is to only post promotional content. If your social media posts just feature your products or services, you're missing the point of social media.

Yes, the people that follow your brand are certainly interested in your products or services. But you need to remember that they can find that information on your website. They're not on social media to read posts that parrot the content from your site.

Instead, you need to remember the purpose of social media - connecting people.
So when you're looking to post content, think about what someone would actually love to know about your business. It might surprise you, but it's actually a lot more interesting for someone to hear your personal thoughts than it is to see a promotional post about your latest product.

Sharing ideas or tips from people in your team is a great option. You could easily record a 15-30 second video using your smartphone, showing a member of your team giving a tip about something your products or services solve.

For example, perhaps you sell an organic shampoo that is perfect for women with curly hair. Why not get one of your team to talk about a great curly hair tip that can improve someone's life. By doing this, you are delivering value and not just promoting your product.

The best way to start a conversation is to ask a question. Sounds simple, doesn't it? Yet it works.

Think about the type of things your ideal customer is interested in. What sort of questions could you ask on social media to get their feedback and responses?

You could even choose to be a bit more generic with your questions, such as: What is your superpower? It's an easy way to get a conversation started.

Dare to be different and let your audience see more than just promotional content. Don't be afraid to pull back the curtain and show what 'behind the scenes' looks like. Your audience will love to learn more about you, your business and why you do what you do.

P.S. If you want to learn more about digital marketing and how you can create website more effectively for your business, I’d be happy to discuss this with you. Please book a meeting with me using my calendar here.
