Question for you… what makes your business different?
Unless you’re the only company in the world who offers the products or services that you offer, which is pretty rare, then your ideal customer will have to make a choice. They’ll need to choose between your business or someone else’s.
So what makes your business stand out?
A lot of business owners will answer with “we offer the best service”. Whilst this is a great thought, it’s also a really generic answer.
That’s not to say that you can’t be known for offering great service, but you need to practice what you preach every single day. You need to offer exceptional service that a customer simply can’t find anywhere else.
What about the price? Many businesses try and compete on price too. As you look around on a daily basis you’ll see businesses claiming to have the “lowest price” or “best price” everywhere. Is that the best option for them though?
Competing on price alone is a race to the bottom. The lower your prices go, the smaller your margins. It also causes problems with the way that customers perceive what it is that you offer.
Sometimes being the cheapest in your marketplace can lead to your potential customers deciding not to purchase from you. They worry that the product or service that you offer is not as good as those of your competitors.
So how can you be unique? How can you stand out and ensure that customers come back to your business time and time again?
- Exceptional customer service - Provide service and support that your customers simply are not able to find anywhere else.
- Be honest - Don’t be afraid to admit when you make mistakes. Your customers will appreciate your honesty more than anything else.
- Create branding that stands out - You only have a few seconds to make a great first impression. Make sure your branding and your message stand out to your target audience.
- Be visible online - When a customer is searching for your business online, make sure that you’re visible at the top of the search engines. If they can’t find you, they’re going to click through to a competitor’s website.
- Reward your loyal customers - Set up a customer loyalty program. Reward customers for returning and shopping with you again and again.
- Offer a solid guarantee - Stand by the products or services that you offer with a guarantee that means something to your customers. Let them know that you’re here for them and that their purchase is backed by the guarantee that you offer.
- Give back - Support an initiative that means something to you and your customers. This could be a local initiative or something with a global reach, such as planting trees for every new sale.
Hopefully, this has given you some food for thought and helps you to think about how your business can stand out in your market.
